Contrary to the domestic set-up though, commercial enterprises do not have the luxury of avoiding their cleaning responsibilities and they are obligated by health and safety regulations and cleanliness standards to tackle their mess head-on.

A scene which comes to mind was my first trip to a poultry processing plant as a young microbiology student. The chickens are delivered rather unceremoniously to the factory and are thankfully blissfully unaware of what awaits them. Once they are killed however the real work begins and it is the role of the staff and equipment on the factory floor to get them to a state where they are good enough to eat. The first step I recall is a de-feathering process that happens rather swiftly, followed by a rather efficient disembowelling process. It was at this point I could see why my supervisor had warned me that I may be put off chicken for a while.

It did not put me off eating chicken at all but it made me realise why stringent cleanliness was essential in any food processing plant. One staff member suitably donned in protective attire had the unenviable job of scooping up the entrails that landed on the floor and placing them in huge containers. I stared at her in awe and she jokingly offered me a shovel. Commercial cleaning products were clearly a non-negotiable in this environment.

As we moved down the production line collecting samples to check for microbial contamination it was clear that this factory had stocked up and used its commercial cleaning supplies.
